Take Action for Elder LGBTQ Rights!

The Equality Act: SAGE National Day of Advocacy

Today, LGBT elders and older people living with HIV from across the country are gathering in Washington, D.C., for SAGE’s first-ever National Day of Advocacy.

Under the current administration, LGBT rights are under attack. But we’re fighting back and advocating for change. Today, LGBT older adults, older people living with HIV, and their allies are rallying together and speaking directly to their members of Congress about:
  • Including both LGBT older people and older people living with HIV as target populations in the reauthorization of the Older Americans Act, which provides funding for programs like Meals on Wheels and others that allow people to age in place.
  • Supporting national civil rights legislation to protect LGBT older people and others from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
  • Mandating more federal government engagement and coordinated research on HIV and aging.

SAGE’s National Day of Advocacy is being held in conjunction with our annual SAGENet meeting, when SAGE affiliates from around the nation gather to share ideas and participate in training sessions.

As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Stonewall and the founding of the modern-day LGBT rights movement, our elders are sending a loud and clear message to Congress that we will continue to fight relentlessly until all LGBT elders and older people living with HIV gain the protections they deserve.
