Indinapolis,IN doesnt have a lot of support regarding its gay community. I've observed serval clubs, hang outs and functions and was kind of disappointed. While observing I've realized a lot of individuals spend more time hating, and beefing with each other rather than sticking together and joining in equality as one. Its bad enough the homophobic opinions are spreaded, and the statistic perspectives are about. I personally feel like all gay people should be at peace with each other rather than bringing ignorance upon themselves. We should have organizations that bring us together and really speak for us. Its either us vs eath other or us vs the outseide world. Maybe if we spend our time speaking out and standing up for ourselves we would be a lot better off, but I would like to hear opinions and positive responses regarding this.

Downtown Indy seems to have more of a community feel within the lgbt family. I'm not sure where you went but Mass Ave is full of acceptance. Old Northside is def. the "gayborhood" =] I agree that there should be more local functions besides the Film Festival and Indy Pride. These only happen once a year!
I have noticed too, that a lot of people do hate and judge their fellow queers and this may be why I don't frequent the bars. I know I am sick of gathering around a watering hole; I want something more!
The K.U.N.T Crusaders are trying to get it together by bringing performers, bands and artists to Indy for all of us to enjoy. Check them out... http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/KweeringUpNapTown?ref=ts

Us v Them isn't just happening in the Indy gay community, it's all over. We can't seem to escape it as a society. We only seem to pull together in an extreme tragedy, like 9/11, Katrina or Haiti, and even then it doesn't last because one side starts blaming the victims like it's their fault or something.
Somehow we have all forgotten to paint with small brushes and lots of colors. Instead, we just use the biggest brush we have and slap on either black or white and get the job done as quick as we can. Sure it is easier that way, but so much is lost.
Personally, I believe the battle for this is in the middle. We will never change the minds of people like the guy I read about this morning who thinks that certain homosexual acts are arguably more destructive, and potentially more costly to society than smoking (Sadly, I'm not kidding).
We are going to win this when the people that watch fox new and hear all this crap and have been thinking all along "wow, homosexuals must be really weird bad people" and then one day find out that bob or sally at work, who finally found the courage to come out, is gay, and a light bulb comes on. Because they actually KNOW bob. They actually KNOW sally. And they know that they aren't weird or bad. Now if they would only go that extra mile and turn off fox lol.
I guess I mean that it is a very fine line. We need the people in the middle. I think they are moving our way, and that is a good thing. I think the way we get them is just being ourselves matter of factly. No need to run around reminding everyone that I'm gay, but no need to hide it either. I talk about my partner. I don't change pronouns, I have pictures of us on my desk. Stuff like that.
I know there are those that think we should be all loud and proud and all that so I'm sure I will get flamed, but at least that should get you some more comments going :) Besides, I also believe that everyone is entitled to their own opinion

You find that in all communities. Surround yourself with like minded people and keep moving forward. Volunteer, work towards equality, whatever you like but make sure it is positive. I've been involved in the Indy activist queer community for years and most of them are fun, supportive, positive and hard working people.
Many LGBT folks need to put the c*cktails down and quite bitching. Step away from the bar and volunteer for IYG or a LGBT supportive political campaign or get 10 buddies together and help clean up a park. Do you know of an elderly LGBT person that is having trouble maintaining there home? Grab some friends and help them out.
My point is, I like a good c*cktail as much as the next person but we all need to take a look at ourselves and ask, "what can I do to help" then go out and do it.

I am a happily married mother of 4, former Marine and small business owner in Greenwood. I am not gay, but I am definitely in full support of equality for everyone. Keep up the open conversations, keep up the posts on facebook, keep up the education of the entire community and maybe someday, someday soon, this forum wont even be necessary. Wouldnt that be wonderful?? Kudos and kisses.
