"As a parent, that is all I could ever have wanted," explained an enthusiastic Annette Gross after a narrow 15-14 vote to pass Proposition 622, successfully adding sexual orientation and gender identity to anti-discrimination code in Indianapolis and Marion County.
"Our children will be protected. This is a long time coming," exclaimed Gross, a member of the local PFLAG chapter and member of the Indianapolis community for over 10 years. In a heated and intense atmosphere, Chairman Steve Talley attempted to maintain order thorughout the special meeting of the City-County Council. Councilor Lance Langsford said it best. "This place is packed." The 15-14 vote came with thunderous applause in the packed council chambers. Schneider said they had done a "disservice to the public and I am ashamed." Despite over five hours of public comment and over a hundred testimonials, amendments and motions were made against the proposition during hearings of the Rules and Public Policy Committee. The amendment to add obesity was quickly defeated, as was Councilor Scott Schneider's motion to table the proposition without discussion. He vowed to offer a proposal to never allow the same issue to come before the full council more than one time in a year. Proposition 622 had come before the council in April and was summarily defeated. The Vote Breakdown |
