Re:Gay Rights Approved - 2005/12/20 17:29 I never thought I'd see the day that the GBLT community in Indy would step out of second class citizenship. This truly is a victory for all of Indy. May the tide of equal rights spread to the surrounding counties and communities as it rightfully should.

Re:Gay Rights Approved - 2005/12/20 20:18 OK...am I the only one who doesn't get why this is being called a gay rights ordinance? Don't get me wrong. I'm elated the proposition passed and I agree with friends who say it's good to have the word "GAY" plastered in the paper and become more visible. I'm all for that. But in this particular instance adding "sexual orientation" doesn't ONLY mean protection for the LGBT community. It also means protection for the straight community, too. Without that phrase, "sexual orientation", straight people were vulnerable to being fired and evicted, too. This is a proud day for Equality all the way around. But that's just how my mind works.

Re:Gay Rights Approved - 2005/12/20 22:01 Yes, it's a good day for Equal Rights. Absolutely.

And, last I looked, Straight folks weren't being denied the right to marry, employment, or anything else for that matter just because they are straight.

Ya know, it's a good day for equal rights.

IT'S A GREAT DAY FOR GAY RIGHTS IN THIS STATE!

And, given one could hardly even see that a glbt community exists in Indiana, look under Gay in the Phone Book. Although there are dozens of organizations which claim to serve the GLBT community, none of them would put the word GAY in their business or entity name.

I mean, from a business perspective, there is no GLBT community in Indianapolis. I mean, if there is, it's invisible to folks that aren't gay, and thereby invisible to the public.

I'm of the belief that Indianapolis as a whole is more embracing of GLBT folk than GLBT folk are with being visible. (just my observation) I really believe NOW is the time for a VISIBLY VIBRANT community, not one that would sit back and be thankful for whatever the "powers that be" would dole out to us.

IT'S A GREAT DAY IN INDIANA FOR GAY RIGHTS!

Insular is not necessarily Non Exclusive. It's just a different way of excluding.

It's a GREAT day for Gay Rights in this state!

Now, perhaps, we will see a more VISIBLE GLBT Community in this great state capital.

Congratulations again,
Jeffrey Cleary

Re:Gay Rights Approved - 2005/12/21 21:23 I must agree with you David. This is not about gay rights. This does protect everyone from discrimination on basis of sexual orientation.

I have heard anecdoctal, specific accounts where being gay was a critical reason why they were chosen for housing. I feel that this selective practice has some benefits. Ultimately, those benefits are at the cost of diversity in the human community, and that is a harm to us all.

Re:Gay Rights Approved - 2006/01/03 18:36 First of all, this is hardly a victory! Gay people are light years away from making any real strides. I mean, think about! Indianapolis just decided in the year 2005 that discriminating against gays in the workplace is wrong? My God, people, this is hardly something to be excited about! Gays are still viewed in America as sinful people who choose their sexual desire for the same sex. We are still in the dark ages, and I will be dead before gays are actually free in this country!
