Dear Dr. Eva,
I've been on high blood pressure medication for several years. When I get a headache, since that is a sign of high blood pressure, I take an extra pill. I also take an extra dose when I eat pork, because I've heard it increases blood pressure (BP). Since I've noticed some problems with sex from my medicine, if I expect to be having sex I skip the dose that day. I know that's probably bad, but sex is important to me. My doctor recommended a home BP cuff, but my insurance doesn't cover it so I haven't gotten one. What do you advise? - John R

Rethink gay marriage
It wasn’t too long ago that opposition to gay marriage was so powerful an issue that Republicans unequivocally turned to it as a means to energize conservative voters. Yet today, as the party contemplates the task of determining its future and its place in American politics, many Republicans say the issue of gay marriage may be turning into more of a hindrance to success than an ally.  Read More

At what age is it “okay” to be gay?
Maybe the reason some people believe someone is “too young” to be gay is because a lot of gay people don’t come out of the closet until they’ve moved out of their unaccepting parents’ homes. Some people come out after trying the “normal lifestyle” with a spouse, two kids and a dog: only to realize that they’ll never be happy in that role. These people often get divorced and realize that they always knew they were different, they just didn’t know how. They didn’t understand the signs. Or they didn’t want to.  Read More

Has the world ever been about anything BUT straight pride?
One of the cornerstones of the GBLT movement has been the concept of Pride. And I applaud it with all my heart, because it is exactly what I feel was and is so needed.

The world denies GBLT Pride. The world suppresses it. And for such a long time – and still today – GBLT Shame has been the standard, not pride. We should be ashamed for what we are. We should change. Whole organisations have been built and funded around forcing us to change our shameful beings. Vast international churches fiercely press that our presence, our existence is shameful and should be repressed and changed and repented of. We should feel guilty, we should be ashamed.

Are You Straight If You're Celibate?
This is a question that would be quite difficult to answer for many right wing bigots. As Rob Tisanai correctly points out, the seriously anti-gay crowd really does seem to believe that one's sexuality only exists when you're actually having sex. At least that's what they think about gay people. Some examples:

Matt Barber of Liberty University threw a fit because Prop 8 Judge Vaughn Walker is gay, but he didn't call the judge a homosexual. No, he called him "an active practitioner of the homosexual lifestyle," and said, "Judge Walker apparently chooses to engage in homosexual conduct," and wrote of Walker's "alleged lifestyle choices."  Read More

Wanting to break the news somewhere public, someplace safe, Jason tagged along with his mom on a shopping trip to Walmart. But he still couldn't say it. He took a pad of paper from the pharmacy counter and wrote, "Will you love me no matter what?" Carolyn Osmanski gave him a quizzical look but answered, "Of course." Jason scribbled another note, crumpled it, handed it to his mom and bolted to a nearby aisle. She looked down at the wrinkled paper: "I'm gay." After Jason Osmanski, 16, told his mom Carolyn, that he is gay, she told him, "I love you no matter what." film. Plus, McNeil said, the Internet has allowed teens to learn more about what it means to be gay or transgender and to connect with others who are.

As society has become more open about sexuality, people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) are coming out at younger ages. It's no longer rare for a high school -- or even a middle school -- to have one or more students who are openly gay or bisexual. They are taking same-sex dates to proms and launching gay-straight alliance clubs.

Dez Bryant doesn’t like that his mother’s gay
So much is wrong with the Dallas Morning News’ article today profiling Oklahoma State wide receiver Dez Bryant, who is headed to the NFL this weekend. First is the multiple uses of the term “sexual preference” to describe Bryant’s mother being a lesbian. I contacted the Morning News and got them to change it online to “sexual orientation,” since “sexual preference” has been listed in the AP Stylebook as a term to avoid since at least 2006. A Spark of Wisdom: My relationship isn't perfect
It seems like a silly thing to say - it certainly seems even sillier to treat this as a guilty admission - but, yes, I confess, my relationship isn't perfect. And it does feel like a confession.

Sometimes Beloved will do things that frustrate me to no end. The fact he thinks that running a vacuum cleaner over about 2 square inches of space in the centre of the room counts as hoovering - and THEN gets huffy if I decide that, y'know, I prefer my carpets NOT to be crusty drives me to distraction.  Read More

Bitch Slap The Movie
If you like smoking hot gay women with guns, trucker mouths and a disdain for the law—and really, who doesn’t?—then you’re in for a treat with Bitch Slap, a guilty pleasure out now on DVD.

The premise is simple. Set on a desolate stretch of highway, the film stars three diabolical dames with a baddie hostage in tow who are on the hunt for a buried fortune in diamonds. The story unfolds through a series of flashbacks, progressively uncovering secret motivations, plot twists and betrayals. It’s a modern post-feminist homage to the sexploitation films of the ’60s, and the result is a film that is equal parts Faster, Pussycat Kill! Kill! and Kill Bill. Girl fights, gun fights, water fights—it’s all here. And, best of all, it’s all seeped in Sapphic seduction.

Your resume is polished. You don your best smile. And hope desperately that the interviewer will like you. Why? Because in these tough economic times, your livelihood depends on it, and this interview could make or break your plans for the next few years (or more) of your life.

How on earth will you answer certain benign questions such as “What brought you to this city?” or “Are you married?” when the answers involve revealing this one particular detail: You’re gay or lesbian?

Coming out during a job interview can definitely be beneficial in terms of long-term productivity and job satisfaction, but is a choice that should really be based on one’s own comfort level, experts say. And as part of that decision-making process, there are certain questions that job seekers can—and should—ask to be better informed.

Where Oppression Comes From
Everywhere we turn, we find evidence of a society where people are mistreated based on various physical, sexual (or sexual preference), linguistic, age and national characteristics. An exonerated Black man in Chicago, who had spent 15 years in prison, goes to a car dealership, puts $20,000 down for a car and is given the runaround by employees, who claim to lose his application. After the man sees the application on a desk and raises a complaint, the police are called in, and they Taser and arrest him. An 11-year-old boy hangs himself with an extension cord after being bullied all year by his school peers for acting "feminine." A restaurant manager explaining that his restaurant is a "family establishment," asks two lesbian women to leave after they hug each other. An immigrant mother from Oaxaca has her newborn taken away from her by a judge because she cannot speak English, and this makes her "unfit." Thousands of examples such as these - some milder, some much worse -could be listed. People experience many of these things as individual acts of discrimination or violence. While it is certainly true that individuals can be and are the bearers of racist, sexist, xenophobic or homophobic ideas and behavior, all of these oppressions are systemic--that is, legally, institutionally or in some other systematic form, they are part of the fabric of the societies in which we live.

Don't let BED DEATH get the best of your relationship!
I am a homo-sex-ual. We homosexuals like to have sex with people of the same gender. We don’t necessarily like them better than we like the other gender; we’d just rather have sex with them.

Isn’t it ironic that we get into relationships with folks of the same sex so that we can have the right kind of sex for us, but then some of us don’t have sex once we’re in those relationships?

Been there and done that. And from what I am hearing, so have a lot of you out there.

Now that I am older, wiser and hornier, I would never put up with a platonic relationship with a lover. Platonic. Doesn’t that mean “friend?” Companionship. Isn’t that what pets are for?  Read More

22 years ago I moved to the Bay Area of California. I came from a mountain west area of the country, but had been raised with an open mind on most things and taught to be fair. When I arrived in California, the first work situation I found myself in my boss was a lesbian woman. This was not something I had been exposed to, and I soon found my understanding and empathy of this situation in question.  Read More
How to Build a Better Queer
It doesn’t look like any of my sister’s kids are gay. She and I scrutinize their behavior for signs while they play and go about their daily routines, but, so far, we can’t find a queer among them. We had a glimmer of hope once when we noticed that one of her sons couldn’t sleep until he’d put all his toys away in their correct places, but then we figured out he just had OCD, not homosexuality. “Maybe one of them will be bi,” I told my sister the...  Read More

Should You Forgive Her Infidelity?
Your girl and your neighbor, a massage therapist, are going at it on the new tuck-and-roll pleather couch you two just picked-up at TJ Maxx last month on your anniversary. How could she? And why didn’t they put down a sheet, so you could take the couch with you in the divorce settlement? Now it’s all coated with slut DNA, yuck. Infidelity in dykeland is rarely exposed in such a sudden and dramatic fashion. In real lesbian life, the discovery is ...  Read More
An Old Friend-A Gay Escort's Reflections About Men
2 years ago.

“Why don’t you come for a visit on Thursday?”

I read the email ten times with a huge smile. J. and I haven’t slept together in almost twenty years – when he was in his sixties and I was in my twenties. Nevertheless, we have stayed in semi-regular touch over the years, offering small services to each other when we could. Because of his wide and various circle of trusted friends, over sixty percent of my current business traces, one way or another, directly back to him. I’ve heard he’s not well.  Read More

We are Moving Forward!
For some of us, the knowledge is hateful, for others, hopeful. Yet the inevitable arc of it is clear: Maybe it will be 10 years, maybe 20, but we can now envision a day when the last legal restrictions against gay men and lesbians will be struck away. A future is coming in which they will be fully protected from discrimination in housing and employment, free to fall in love and tell it to the judge, to make end-of-life decisions for their partner...  Read More

Societal Brainwashing Begins in the Cradle!
Growing up in a heterosexist society can be a challenge to us all. Especially those of us who grow up to discover, yep, I’m gay. We absorb the societal norms that surround us even on a subconscious level. Not only do we have to “de-program” ourselves from homophobic notions but also liberate ourselves from sexist gender assumptions. Blue for boys, pink for girls. A truck for Bobby, a doll for Suzie, etc. This article is from a website called...  Read More

Should Gay/Lesbian Cruises Visit Anti-Gay Ports of Call?
We, the LGBT population, are a desirable demographic. On a national level, the LGBT market encompasses over 16 million Americans with a combined spending/buying power of $500 billion. The median household income for gays & lesbians is $60,000 - $80,000. Market studies show that we love to travel, shop and dine-out, and on average, we have the expendable income to do so. Who wouldn’t want to target us for tourism dollars?! So should we visit ...  Read More
A Family is a Family - Love is All That Matters
What makes a family? Many of us in the GLBT community at large have children or we are with partners that have children or we have chosen to become parents. Whatever our unique experience, many of us have kids.

Even though I am an openly out and proud member of the GLBT community, I still struggle with internal homophobia from time to time. Growing up in a heterosexist society can take its toll. I realize I have internalized some of the negative stereotypes and beliefs that surround me. I have to consciously challenge and examine some of my thoughts to stay healthy-minded and self-accepting. Two recent stories brought this challenge up for me.

Choosing Your Truth
Did anyone ever consider that maybe God created homosexuality as a part of his Master Plan? Maybe he didn't want the population from getting too large, too fast. Think about it. Most experts agree that approximately 10 percent of us are gay. That's one in every 10 people. If this figure is correct, imagine how many more people there would be on this planet today if homosexuality wasn't natural and intended by God. I mean, if every gay person in history was not gay, surely this planet would be a lot more crowded today than we already are.

Gay Adolescents Are More Prone To Bullying
The act and victimization of bullying continues to be a problem among today's youth. While many children are experiencing this form of violence, it is more prevalent in children that are different from the social norm. As medical professionals continue to further their understanding of bullying, research shows a high rate of sexual minority youth who experience this harmful activity.

A new study conducted by doctors at Nationwide Children's Hospital found that sexual minority youth, or teens that identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, are bullied two to three times more than heterosexuals.  Read More
